SULPHONE POLYMERS (PSU & PES)
Description
Polysulphone (PSU) and Polyethersulphone (PES) are tough materials with a wide temperature range of use. They both have excellent resistance to creep and are self-extinguishing.
Properties
Properties for both materials are a high Heat Distortion Temperature (HDT) with a maximum continuous operating temperature up to 180˚C. The toughness of the material is retained down to -70˚C. Although they have good impact strength it is lower than for polycarbonate. They are resistant to ionizing radiation.
PES has better creep resistance, smoke emission on burning characteristics and a higher HDT than PSU; whereas PSU absorbs less water and is cheaper than PES.
Colouring
The natural colour of the materials is transparent amber so they can be coloured but there is a need to be aware of the high processing temperatures.

Finishing
These materials can be machined. Joining can be by gluing or welding (frictional, thermal and ultrasonic). Parts can be painted, metallised or electroplated.
Applications
These materials are expensive so use is limited to applications where long term thermal stability, dimensional stability, toughness and resistance to burning are required. They have been used for microwave grilles and dishes, medical respirators, dental reamers and dialysis equipment. Due to good chemical resistance and operating temperature range they are also used in dishwasher and automotive components. PSU is being used in the dairy industry to replace stainless steel and glass in milk collection equipment.
